The country we will describe as hospitable with beautiful nature and a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Whenever our team is asked about our top three holiday destinations, many of us include Greece. Not only the mainland of Greece is astonishing; the many islands around it are just as lovely, with one of them being Crete.
Crete is an attractive island where you can enjoy beautiful beaches, culture, amazing nature, exciting activities and delicious food. There is so much to see and explore, that many travelers return to Crete time and time again. What’s more: the climate of Crete is so lovely, that a stay in May or October can definitely be recommended, when it is also a lot quieter on the island!
In this blog, we highlight some beautiful villages and beaches, including some wonderful hidden gems, far away from the madding crowd.
Elounda & Spinalonga
The surroundings of Elounda are truly amazing. Green valleys and calm bays make up the landscape of this region. Elounda is a cozy and lively village situated on the coast. In the evening, you can enjoy delicious dishes with fresh fish in one of the many great fish restaurants. Just off the coast lies the rocky island of Spinalonga. From Elounda, several excursion boats depart to this small island. A visit will undoubtedly be an astonishing experience and the island has a compelling history.
Skaleta Beach
Skaleta’s large beach offers many facilities such as bars and tavernas. Skaleta is mainly visited by people looking for peace and quiet. As the beaches are long and wide, you will regularly be able to find a spot quit enough to completely unwind and enjoy a lovely day at the beach. You can also try out many different water sports at this beach. A short drive away, you find our beautiful villas Villa Anna Kyrianna and Villa Kyria, where you can enjoy the afternoon sun from your own terrace.
A hidden gem
One truly hidden beach in Crete, is Green Beach/ Diskiari Beach. You park your rental car right along the beach, only a few meters away from your sun lounger. You can rent the sun loungers on the beach and find a nice spot in the shade. Green Beach is often peaceful and quite, with mostly locals visiting and the water is clear blue. Green Beach Taverna, the small restaurant next to the beach is highly recommended. Not only for a dinner after your day at the beach, but also for a great breakfast. Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and honey is the perfect breakfast to start your day. After a day at the beach, we recommend the prawns in raki sauce; although the zucchini fries, Greek feta salad and tzatziki are delicious as well.
Seeking tranquility in Sfinari
Sfinari is a fishing village, located on the west coast of Crete. To this day, Sfinari is the ideal place to escape the crowds. It is a lovely village perfect for finding peach and quit. Sfinari has a nice beach with some basic facilities and most of the beach has pebbles. Walking to the north, you will find many private spots with rocks where you can swim and sunbathe in peace. Lygaria
The village of Lygaria is a short distance from Heraklion. Lygaria has an amazing moon-shaped bay with a sand beach with sun loungers. You can get a good lunch at one of the local tavernas, enjoying the typical local dishes or the catch of the day. You can also get a coffee at this beach. Lygaria beach is a great place when you want to have tranquility during your holiday, but also want to have some facilities close by.
